Nepal, Mt. Ama Dablam, (left to right) Luis Benitez, Erik Weihenmayer, and Chris Morris ascending switchbacks in the shadow of Ama Dablam on their way to Camp 1. The 22,486-foot Ama Dablam is a technically challenging mixed rock, ice, and snow climb. Erik usually hikes with a partner in front of him who keeps a bell attached to his backpack. Although Erik can easily hear and then follow in the footsteps of the climber in front of him, in high winds the bell makes staying on trail a little easier.
